City for LGBT+ five years of impact
As we prepare for the sixth edition of City for LGBT+, an annual event raising funds for small LGBT+ rights organisations, we take a look back at the impact this event has had since its inception.
City for LGBT+ is a partnership between The Funding Network, GiveOut, LGBT Consortium and global financial services group, Macquarie.
Over the past five years some 750 people have come together at Macquarie’s London headquarters, to hear powerful presentations from leaders of organisations fighting against human rights abuses which span exclusion from daily life to the risk of death.
To date, City for LGBT+ events have raised £300,000 for 20 organisations working in the UK and Global South.
Alumni organisations include Jamaica based, J-FLAG which used funds raised in 2019 to rebuild ‘Rainbow House’, a vital safe space for the community which had been destroyed after a devastating fire; Helem which used funds raised in 2022 to continue the fight for equal rights in Lebanon after successfully challenging the government's ban on Pride events; and in 2023 in the UK, LGBT Consortium raised funds to support grassroot groups working at the forefront of the transgender rights movement.
This year, following unprecedented threats to hard-won LGBTQI rights around the world, City for LGBT+ 2024 is dedicated to those who are 'Resisting the Rollback of Rights'. Activists are standing on the frontlines, bravely defending their communities and challenging oppressive laws, but they urgently need more resources to continue their vital work.
Help us continue this story of impact and join us on Wednesday 16 October, from 5.30pm-9pm. This year we'll be supporting:
- ASEAN SOGIE Caucus - Southeast Asia
ASC is a network of LGBTQI human rights organisations and activists working across Southeast Asia, ensuring the involvement of LGBTQI voices in regional and global human rights advocacy initiatives.
- Consortium - United Kingdom
Consortium is the UK’s umbrella body for LGBTQI groups and organisations, providing capacity support and grants to build a stronger LGBTQI sector and increase opportunities for LGBTQI people and communities.
- The Other Foundation - Southern Africa
The Other Foundation is an African trust that advances equality and freedom in southern Africa, aiming to shift power and narrative within the LGBTQI movement in southern Africa by centring local expertise and community-led efforts.
