Strategic Funding Group helps to evidence impact of childhood mentoring

When a network of enthusiastic, socially-minded donors are connected with a network of dedicated volunteers, fantastic things can happen. In May 2020, The Funding Network’s Strategic Funding Group elected to fund work by The Kids Network to measure and articulate the long-term impact of the charity’s early-intervention mentoring programme on children's lives.

Assessing and communicating the value of service delivery is vital for any charity, but is often overlooked due to funding gaps or insufficient time. TFN’s support gave The Kids Network the impetus to build a reusable impact framework, including reworked impact measurement methods and a new impact strategy, which will serve them for years to come. This will not only help them to raise more funds in the future but will provide useful data and insight to further improve the support they offer to young people.

Highlights of their long-term impact review included:

  • 86% of caregivers were clear that their children were still positively benefitting from the mentoring experience
  • 94% of caregivers said that their child's increase in confidence and emotional wellbeing had been sustained

Digging into the data, the charity found that children who are younger when they receive mentoring (aged 10 and below) experience a larger number of sustained positive outcomes than those aged 11 and above. This finding has allowed The Kids Network to evidence the need for their early intervention.

Over the last year, The Kids Network has supported over 400 young people and was one of the few services still providing one-to-one mentoring support throughout the pandemic.

Sarah Woodcock, Founder of The Kids Network, says: “Funding from the Strategic Funding Group has been monumental in allowing us to unlock our potential to improve the quality and increase the capacity of our support for some of the most vulnerable children living in London”.
