Meet Octopus Giving, our newest corporate member
We're very excited to welcome Octopus Giving as our newest corporate member. Some of the team came along to our event at Funding Circle last week, and we caught up with Gina to find out more about Octopus Giving and to see what they thought of the event.
Could you tell us about Octopus Giving?
Octopus Giving is the charitable foundation set up by Octopus Investments to channel our corporate funds to make a real, positive and lasting impact on society by supporting social enterprises that resonate with our people. We take the skills and resources at our disposal and we give five brilliant entrepreneurial charities, led by inspirational people, every bit of help we can. Since selecting the charity partners in 2014 (CALM, North & South London Cares, Youth at Risk, Greatwood and Beyond Autism) we've built meaningful relationships with them that have allowed us - and them - to have far more impact than we ever could alone. Together we've donated over 4,000 volunteer hours and £700,000.
Why did you decide to join TFN as a corporate member?
One of our trustees, Chris, is a TFN member and explained how it worked and what being part of TFN involved. Jocelyn Tasker, our Chair, was so taken with the concept she decided to go along and see for herself. She thought it was such an amazing way to raise money for smaller charities that she recommended joining as a corporate member to our panel of trustees and they agreed. It fitted in perfectly with how Octopus Giving would like to help fledgling charities that are just starting out and those that often have difficulty obtaining funding.
You attended your first event at Funding Circle last week – what did you make of it?
We were greatly impressed by the way it was run and the idea of donation matching really helped to keep the momentum of pledges going. Each charity explained their vision perfectly within the 6 minutes allowed and it was good to actually see people who had benefited from the charity, bravely standing up and explaining their own personal stories. It was totally engaging, and for those of us that went we found it so inspiring that we were continually singing its praises the next day in the office.
